Airpath News
WALTHAM, Mass – January 30, 2006 – Airpath Wireless, Inc., the leader in enabling management and roaming for wireless broadband networks, today announced that it has joined forces with ROC-net Services, a Northern Illinois-based regional co-operation of local technology companies and communities dedicated to providing broadband communication infrastructure and applications, to roll out a wireless deployment in Rockford, Illinois. Airpath’s WiBOSS Metro solution, a hosted OSS and management platform designed specifically to support large area wireless broadband networks, will provide the Web portal, service plans and billing capabilities to ROC-net.
The privately owned, mixed use network will provide public and private wireless services to targeted areas of Rockford, h ome to more than 150,000 people in the third largest city in Illinois. The wireless services will also be available to enterprises such as local healthcare organizations, colleges and universities. The city footprint will start with an eight square mile radius of open wireless access with a combination of free and fee-based services. The official kick-off for the project takes place today in Rockford with the Lieutenant Governor of Illinois, Pat Quinn, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin and Congressman Don Manzullo attending to celebrate this technological development led by the entrepreneurs of ROC-net.
“One of ROC-net’s goals is to broaden the area’s wireless connectivity in order to make the Northern Illinois region an attractive area for business development,” said John Avampato, CEO of ROC-net. “With the help of our partners we were able to get this network up and running quickly. We teamed up with Airpath because we needed flexibility and scalability as we grow the wireless footprint throughout Rockford and the State of Illinois.”
WiBOSS Metro is a hosted, hardware-neutral platform that enables wireless Internet service providers and system integrators to deploy and manage Internet access service for city deployments. It performs all critical business tasks for network operators and service providers such as subscriber management, provisioning, authentication, authorization, accounting, and report generation, within a single application. Full customer care support for providers and end users is available via Airpath’s 24x7x365 customer care facility.
“Private organizations like ROC-net are increasingly rolling out city-wide wireless networks,” explained Olivia Hecht, director of marketing, Airpath. “Because Airpath’s hosted service handles the back-office operations, ROC-net can focus on its organizational mission while we worry about authentication, billing and end-user technical questions. As the number and footprint of these city-wide networks grow, Airpath can enable providers to wholesale access to these footprints to enable seamless roaming.”
Airpath partner Nomadix, the leading provider of intelligent network devices and interconnect services that make nomadic computing easy, and 5G Wireless Solutions, Inc., an emerging leader in the wireless broadband industry and a wholly owned subsidiary of 5G Wireless Communications, Inc., are both providing hardware to ROC-net for this deployment. Nomadix is supplying its AG5000 Gateway while 5G is providing its 360° CityWide BaseStations and Enterprise BaseStations. 5G Wireless is also providing systems integration services and consulting to aid with the wireless deployment. Fridh Corporation, a family-owned corporation which develops, builds and manages real estate in the Rockford area, is working providing roof rights to the organization on many of its buildings throughout the city.
